Through a directory, events, performances, advocacy, and partnerships, AWFC has helped shift industry norms. Past presidents include Laura Karpman (2014-2016), Lolita Ritmanis (2016-2018), Starr Parodi (2018-2020) and Catherine Joy (2020-2022).
Since its inception, the membership of the AWFC has grown to over 1,300 active members spanning the globe. With this expansion, the AWFC Directory has become a critical comprehensive searchable resource for access and visibility of emerging and established composers, that is actively used by decision makers and creatives. VISIBILITY
AWFC has made a powerful impact through concerts, panels, and collaborations. In 2016, The Women Who Score showcased 20 women composers with an orchestra and choir, drawing thousands—including key industry executives. AWFC has since co-hosted panels and workshops at major film and music festivals worldwide, evolving from women-only events to fully inclusive showcases.
Signature events include the Sundance (2015) and Tribeca (2017) composer brunches, now annual fixtures. In 2020, AWFC expanded to the UK, strengthening its advocacy and community in Europe.
In 2019, the AWFC Mentorship Program launched, providing a valuable opportunity for emerging composers to meet privately with established professionals for consultation, insight and guidance. This highly competitive program, with hundreds of qualified applicants, continues to grow and champion talent.
AWFC also collaborates with leading music creator organizations to address industry-wide issues affecting composers globally.
AWFC remains dedicated to amplifying the work of women and gender diverse composers, advocating for inclusion, and strengthening opportunities for all composers in visual media.
