With
Psychologist
LISA CHESTER SCHYMAN
DR. HOWARD LEIFMAN Ph.D.

Composer
CATHERINE JOY (AWFC President)

Conversation Led by
JOEL DOUEK (SCL Vice President)
JACK D. ELLIOT (SCL Seminar Chair)
RUSSELL BROWER (SCL Game Music Chair)

As predominantly freelancers, our composer community has been facing extreme and protracted challenges throughout the pandemic. Personal and creative issues, as well as financial concerns, have become amplified, while we have had to grapple with the often precarious nature of our chosen profession. The feedback from our anonymous survey on the mental health of the SCL membership has strongly confirmed this and will form the basis for this seminar’s panel discussion. We will dive deep into these experiences to draw out useful insights and points of guidance to help us heal, grow, and face the future.

VIFF AMP 2021 lineup:

Friday October 8th

2pm - 3:30pm - AMP Keynote w. Linda Perry

What do P!nk, Celine Dion, Alicia Keys, James Blunt, Christina Aguilera, Adele, and Gwen Stefani all have in common? All have recorded songs by the legendary Linda Perry. Perry has also composed songs and musical scores for film and television. AMP is honoured to open our weekend of programming with a one-on-one conversation between this musical icon and creative director/host of the Producer’s Lounge program Jane Aurora to go over Perry’s career and do a deep dive into her working process.

Saturday Oct 9th

2:00pm - 3:30pm - PANEL - Stages to Screens

Hosted by Tarun Nayar (Delhi 2 Dublin, Snakes x Ladders, 5X Festival), we return to this popular panel with a new group of artists who will share their experiences on how they have successfully made the crossover from the pop world to working in music for media: Dean "DC" Charles (J Cole, Patti LaBelle, Raphael Saadiq), Dan "The Automator" Nakamura (Gorillaz, Deltron 3030, Dr. Octagon) and Isa Summers (Florence and The Machine).

4:00pm - 5:30pm - PANEL - The Art of Music Supervision

Did you know that music supervision for theatrical trailers requires an approach vastly different from music supervision for the film and television world? Learn about the process, including sound design and what music supervisors for trailers look for when choosing music. Our panel will have three of the top talents in the business of theatrical trailer music supervision: Disney’s Brian Vickers, SILO Music’s Reuben Sears, and Wild Card’s Evelin Garcia.

Sunday Oct 10th

2:00pm - 3:30pm - PANEL - Music in Daughter of a Lost Bird

A look inside the process of creating the evocative score for the film Daughter of a Lost Bird with director Brooke Pepion Swaney and composer Laura Ortman. Swaney and Ortman will share their process of working together and the importance of cultural identity and sensitivity in creating a film about personal discovery in the context of Indigenous culture.

4:00pm - 5:30pm - PANEL - The Art of Composition

In 2021, how do we define superheroes and how does a composer score a superhero project to reflect this new era? Scoring a superhero project has its unique set of challenges and opportunities. Moderated by composer and Sound Composers Guild of Canada Vice President Adrian Ellis, Natalie Holt (Loki) and Laura Karpman (What If…?, Lovecraft Country) will share what it means to score epically in today’s world of film and television.

7:30pm - 9:00pm - AMP Keynote w. Laura Karpman

VIFF AMP closes our programming with a conversation about music and culture with Vancouver Symphony Orchestra President and CEO Angela Elster and Grammy and Emmy Award-winning composer Laura Karpman. Karpman’s music is on the cutting edge of various musical genres (film and television scoring, symphonic music, opera, jazz, and pop) and she has been one of the leaders in the fight for greater diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry.

Join the Women in The Mix Study!

Erin Barra is conducting this study in partnership with the Recording Academy, Arizona State University, and Berklee. It builds from and expands on the previous research she did and will be released at the Grammy’s in 2022. We are excited and hopeful that this will be something substantial and that the information will help organizations like ours to raise money and awareness around our efforts.
Erin was one of the leads on a study Berklee released in partnership with Women in Music in early 2019 about the opportunities and obstacles women in the music industry face.
