Dern studied film scoring at the private film music academy "musicube" (Germany) in 2007/2008, followed by a Bachelor's degree at the acclaimed ArtEZ Conservatory (Netherlands) from 2008-2012. The Film Scoring Certificate Program at UCLA concluded her academic studies in 2013. She deepened her knowledge later on when she was selected for the annual ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop with Richard Bellis in 2016 and for an internship at Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Productions in the same year.
From early 2013 until late 2014, Dern has been known to work as a full-time staff composer for Hollywood Scoring, specializing in music for TV, Video Games and Motion Picture Advertising. As part of their in-house team she worked on Microsoft's HALO V: Guardians, Riot Games' League of Legends, FOX' Gracepoint, Disney's Tinkerbell - The Pirate Fairy, and more.
She later collaborated with Christopher Lennertz and Alan Menken on both seasons of ABC's Galavant and went on to assist William Ross, Steve Jablonsky, and Pinar Toprak. She also collaborated with Ryan Shore on his Disney show Penn Zero: Part-time Hero and the Universal production Monsterville: Cabinet of Souls. Since early 2016, Dern has frequently partnered up with Klaus Badelt to co-compose music for movies, video games, plays, and theme park rides.
Additional to her collaborations with composers, Dern frequently works with Belgian director / writer Julien Kerknawi (A Broken Man, The Last Front), producer Straw Weisman (The Jade Pendant, Captain Black), director / producer Enrico Natale (WTF, Broken), producer Robyn Klein (Fearless, Leap!, Trouble), animation company Prana Studios (Wish), director / producer Ruben Vandenborre (The Claus Family, Friend of Gold), and the German production studio Blue Eyes Fiction (Lilly The Witch 3, Help I Shrunk My Parents, Help I Shrunk My Friends, Four Enchanted Sisters), among others.
Dern's scores are frequently recorded at AIR Lyndhurst and Abbey Road Studios in London by the LSO and LMO, and at Galaxy Studios by the Brussels Philharmonic. As part of her initiative to promote the visibility of ethnic and gender minorities in film scoring, Dern was featured on the official AVID blog as well as AVID's NAMM 2019 stage, and was invited to a roundtable at Output, a ComicCon panel in San Diego, and an animation panel for the SCL. She was also chosen as one of 10 female composers for the first installment of the now annual Future Is Female concert series. Dern conducted the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra throughout the entire second half of the concert and contributed her suite from The Jade Pendant. She also frequently serves as session conductor on her own scores. In fall 2019, Dern's music was also featured as part of Amy Andersson's "Women Warriors: Voices of Change" concert at Lincoln Center, NY.
Dern is a member of the performing rights organizations ASCAP and GEMA. Her scores are frequently published by established soundtrack label MovieScore Media.
